BBA: Five priorities for the EU
Monday 16 January 2012 - by Angela Knight
In all of this we need also to stress the importance of the single market. The single market is the engine of the region's growth, and it will be the source of its economic recovery, so we need to refocus our sights on this.
What is required is a constructive and decisive debate between those who believe that Europe can develop on an inward-looking basis and those who view the economic interests of Europe's citizens as being much better represented by an outward-looking Europe capable of competing in the world's markets.
In other words, we need to focus the debate on the outcomes we want for the single market, not the processes and mechanisms underpinning it.
And we need that decision soon: the markets - and the prospect of economic recovery - will not wait.
