Swiss banker escapes jail over stolen data

Wednesday 19 January 2011 - by Nicola York

The Swiss banker who handed over details of thousands of offshore tax account holders to Wikileaks earlier this week escaped jail today, despite being found guilty of breaking Swiss data protection laws.

Rudolf Elmer, who formerly headed up the Cayman Islands branch of Swiss private bank Julius Baer, was handed a fine of around $6,000 by a judge at Zurich's regional court this afternoon.

Baer met with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at a press conference in London on Monday to hand over the data which he said revealed the alleged "abuses" and "tax evasion" of offshore banks and those who invest with them.

Elmer says he wants to expose the practices of politicians, celebrities, influential businesspeople and hedge funds, among others.
